Observations on a Cytoplasmic Component in Lens Fibers

چکیده
Electron microscope studies of adul t animal lenses have revealed the presence of a cytoplasmic substance in the form of filamentous and possibly spherical s t ructures (1). I t has been designated as low densi ty mater ial with reference to its opacity to the electron beam. Since this system bore no resemblance to any cytoplasmic elements previously described in other tissues, an identification of the low densi ty ma t t e r was a t tempted . The present report deals with the isolation and general properties of a cell fraction which appears identical wi th the low densi ty mater ial in the osmium-fixed and embedded state.

Histoanatomical study of the lens and ciliary body in ostrich eye
In the present study, the lenses and ciliary bodies of 20 ostrich eyes were studied macroscopically and microscopically. The histological slides were studied after staining by hematoxylin and eosin, Verhoeff, Van Gieson, and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS). Posterior surface of lens was more convex than its anterior surface. The average lens diameter and thickness were respectively measured as 1.43 ...
متن کاملElectron Microscope Study of Lens Fibers
Comparative electron microscope investigations on sections of the lens cortex of the normal, mature rat, rabbit, monkey, and the normal calf reveal similar patterns of intracellular organization. The superficial lens fiber contains a nucleus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, dense granules, Golgi complex, and a quantity of small structures of low opacity which appear as filamentous and sphe...
متن کاملPeriaxin is required for hexagonal geometry and membrane organization of mature lens fibers.
Transparency of the ocular lens depends on symmetric packing and membrane organization of highly elongated hexagonal fiber cells. These cells possess an extensive, well-ordered cortical cytoskeleton to maintain cell shape and to anchor membrane components. Periaxin (Prx), a PDZ domain protein involved in myelin sheath stabilization, is also a component of adhaerens plaques in lens fiber cells. ...
متن کاملIsolation and in vitro translation of delta-crystallin mRNA from embryonic chick lens fibers.
Of the protein synthesized and accumulated during differentiation of embryonic chick lens fibers, 70-80% is the tissue specific protein delta-crystallin. We have isolated and partially characterized the total cytoplasmic mRNA from purified lens fibers of 15-day-old embryos as an initial step toward understanding the regulated expression of delta-crystallin during development. Each lens fiber ma...
متن کاملEmbryology and Morphology of the Lens.
The lens is derived from surface ectodermal cells which lie directly over the optic vesicle from which they are separated by the basement membranes and a thin interepithelial space. Early differentiation, folloicing induction, involves forming a compact disk of these epithelial cells in luhich the intercellular spaces have disappeared and their height increased. This disk or placode invaginates...
